Sharp

A sharp is a skilled, disciplined bettor whose wagers are respected by sportsbooks for their accuracy. Sharp money often moves lines because books adjust prices when these bettors act. The term contrasts with the public, the broader casual betting crowd.

A sharp is defined by results and discipline, not by volume or confidence. These bettors tend to price games carefully, act on value rather than on fandom, and manage their stakes methodically. Because their track record is strong, books pay attention to what they do.

That attention is why sharp money moves markets. When a book sees respected action on the Summit Rovers, it often shifts the line to protect itself, even if little other money has come in. A line that moves against the popular side is a common footprint of sharp activity.

Sharp versus public

The contrast with public betting is central. Public money tends to flow toward favorites and popular teams, while sharp money looks for mispriced numbers wherever they sit. Books read the mix of both to decide where a price should be.

Not a label to chase

Being called sharp is an outcome of a careful long-term process, not a style you can adopt overnight. Copying a line move you assume is sharp, without understanding why, is guessing dressed up as insight.

The idea of the sharp mainly helps explain why lines move the way they do.
